Brighten your photos with this technique using Photoshop.
Step 01. Fire up Photoshop and open this image. You can download this from this site. For the sake of this tutorial I have changed the image size to 640 x 480 px at 72 ppi.
Step 02. Next, go to Image > Mode > Lab Color and then press Ctrl + J to duplicate.
Step 03. In the Channels Palette, select " a ", click the eye icon on Lab layer. See image below.
Step 04. Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels (or press Ctrl + L)... and follow the following settings.
Heres the result.
Step 05. Go back to the Channels Palette, select " b ", press Ctrl + L and adjust the sliders to these settings.
This is how our image looks like now.
Step 06. Back to the Channels Palette, select the Lightness layer, press Ctrl + L and have these settings.
Here's the result.
Step 07. Select Lab layer, and go back to your Layers Palette and with the background copy still selected, click the Add layer mask button in the bottom of your Layers Palette because we have to do some retouching.
Step 08. Grab the Brush tool (brush size = 100, hardness = 0, opacity = 50, Foreground = #000000). Then, start brushing off the color you want to discard like what i did. Here's my product.
Step 09. If you want to go further, press Ctrl + E to merge the two layers.
Step 10. Finally, go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and have the following settings.
Here's my final image.
Now compare the two images.
